Next Tuesday (28 March) the new £1 coin comes into circulation, but retailers will be able to accept both coins until 15 October 2017.

To enable banks to process coins during the co-circulation period, businesses must return old and new £1 coins in separate bags. Retailers are also advised to check with their suppliers whether their equipment is able to accept or dispense both £1 coins or just one.

The current £1 coin is being replaced for the first time in over 30 years because of its vulnerability to sophisticated counterfeiters.

Free downloadable information is available at www.thenewpoundcoin.com to assist with planning for the launch and transition period, and to train staff on the features of the new coin.
