The Federation of Wholesale Distributors' My Shop Is Your Shop (MSYS) campaign has published its What's On? leaflet, giving key dates and ideas for community activities over the summer.

In addition to National Independents' Week (NIW) from June 1 and National Cuppa Day on June 3, the leaflet includes an introduction to a new initiative, National Walk & Shop Day, which is scheduled for September 16.

MSYS chairman Alan Toft said the events would give c-stores "the positive marketing support independents needed in the current economic climate".

He added: "These big events give the industry sales-boosting marketing platforms and it's our job to get these dates imprinted in the consciousness of the sector."

The What's On leaflet gives details of retailers' plans for NIW. Among them is Edinburgh retailer Dennis Williams, who plans a trolley dash around his Oxgangs Broadway store.

"We will have a quiz for customers based on their knowledge about our shop

and the correct entries will go into the hat to pick the winner of the trolley dash," Dennis said. He has also persuaded local MSP David McLetchie and local councillors to work behind the till during the week.

Tetley and McVitie's will again support National Cuppa Day with promotions through wholesalers which will give independents free product so they can offer their customers a free cup of tea and a biscuit.

Booker, Londis, Budgens, Landmark Wholesale, Costco, Makro, Bestway, Batleys and Sugro have all indicated that they are supporting MSYS and NIW, Toft said.

National Walk & Shop Day is described as "a celebration of the environmental and financial benefits for the consumer who walks to the local store," and is intended to extend the MSYS season beyond NIW.
