Unilever's Partners for Growth category management website has experienced a huge increase in the number of retailers using it for range and merchandising advice.
Some 7,523 different users visited the site during May, an increase of 87% year on year, downloading more than 5,500 pages of information.
Unilever customer convenience director Stephen Moodie believes that tight control over ranges is particularly important during economic uncertainty.
He said: "As the economic consequences of the current climate continue to unfold, it is more important than ever for retailers to make the most of their existing business. Retailers should be constantly reviewing their categories to ensure they stock the right range and merchandise it correctly.
"That is why Unilever set up its category management programme in 2003."
Partners for Growth provides category advice across nine product groups, including national average sales data, bestsellers lists and planograms.
