Spar's north west regional distribution company James Hall & Co is set to invest £30m in a major new depot.
The Preston-based company claims that the new depot will probably be the most modern distribution centre in the UK. The 45,000sq metre depot will be based at Bluebell Way on the outskirts of the city.
As well as the warehouse facility, the site will include more than 3,000sq metres of office space, a 700sq metre training facility, a 275sq metre Spar store, a petrol filling station and a crêche. It is expected to be fully operational within three years.
James Hall & Co managing director Andrew Hall said: "It has become quite clear that our existing premises are past their sell-by date and we have to move to modernise and gain maximum efficiencies. This means we will be able to supply the increasing number of company and independently-owned Spar stores with all the services that are required to be successful in today's market."
The company currently employees 560 staff and supplies nearly 500 Spar stores in the North of England.
