An East Sussex retailer is to open round the clock in a bid to win back trade from a 24-hour Tesco Express.
Diwan Patel and his wife Pratima, who have owned Sayers News and Off Licence in Dyke Road, Hove, for 17 years, say they have been forced into the move after seeing business slump since Tesco opened on the forecourt site across the road six years ago.
Diwan told Convenience Store he believed he would be guaranteed trade as, unlike the Tesco store, he has a 24-hour licence to sell alcohol. He said: "Business has gone down so I have had to resort to this. We're hoping this can really help pick up extra trade."
Diwan has employed an extra member of staff to man the store from 9pm through to 5.30am, but says he will also help out when he is needed.
He added: "This isn't something we planned to do but we want to keep the business going. People who have heard what we are doing have been very positive about it."
