Co-operative stores in North Yorkshire are offering refreshments to police officers so they can spend time with customers.

The scheme, dubbed “It’s a Fair Co-op of Tea, Guv,” is being rolled out across North Yorkshire and the city of York in support of the Safer Neighbourhood Policing Strategy.

Fifty-four stores are giving officers out on the beat a cup of tea and the chance to talk to staff and the public.

The Co-operative’s regional loss prevention manager Peter Cooper said: “Our partnership with North Yorkshire Police is designed to strengthen relationships and in the process we hope the scheme will be a deterrent to local criminals.”

Chief Constable Grahame Maxwell said he hoped locals would come in and discuss any issues of interest or concern.
