Independent retailers have urged suppliers to throw their weight behind the My Shop is Your Shop (MSYS) campaign's National Independents' Week in June.
Linda Williams, who runs Broadway Convenience Store in Oxgangs, Edinburgh, with her husband Dennis, told delegates at this week's Federation of Wholesale Distributors conference that more retailers would be encouraged to join the MSYS event if suppliers and manufacturers showed their support for it.
"We need as many small retailers to be involved as possible, and that will be encouraged by more large companies endorsing the concept," Linda said. "After all, the more business we do, the more business you do."
The Williams' programme of events for NIW 2007 included a fun day, with food and prizes donated by the store's suppliers. "We basically spoke to all the reps who visited our store and they collected as much stuff as they could find," Linda said. "One sponsored a barbecue and others provided samples. Underpinning the whole event was a week of special promotional activity which we put together with the support of numerous companies," she added.
Manchester store owner David Kirwin also called on suppliers to back the campaign. "As an independent retailer with much to gain from your involvement, I urge you to beef up this campaign even more," he said.
