A theatre group is to receive Heritage Lottery funding to document the history of local stores in the Black Country area of the West Midlands.
Black Country Touring will record interviews with owners and customers for a theatrical performance and exhibition to commemorate small shops' importance through the years.
Project co-ordinator Bobby Tiwana said: "Local shops are changing and declining at a massive rate. The project will capture their distinctiveness and essence which will be presented in numerous ways, as well as preserved for present and future generations."
Anne Jenkins, head of the Heritage Lottery Fund for the West Midlands, added that small stores were an important part of local heritage.
