The Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) has released an on-line calculator to help retailers work out if they have to join the Batteries Regulation Scheme.

From 1 February, stores that sell over 32kg of batteries annually will be obliged to take back used batteries from customers for them to be collected for recycling. Any retailer who does sell above the annual limit should register with Defra and a Battery Compliance Scheme that will collect the batteries free of charge.

Retailers that don’t sell over the limit can still join the scheme but may be charged for collection.

The Defra on-line calculator can be accessed here
