A Scottish community has been rocked by the murder of a popular local retailer.
Ahmjid Ismail, 34, was stabbed in an unprovoked attack while working at Kirkland Stores in Maybole, South Ayshire, on Wednesday, November 8.
A 46-year-old local man, John McGeechen, has been charged with murder and theft, and remanded in custody.
Ahmjid was discovered in the store by a member of the public and taken to Ayr Hospital, but died a short time later. He was working alone at the shop, which his family has owned for more than 20 years.
Police described Ahmjid as a jovial, friendly man who always took the time to speak to his customers. Flowers have been laid at the store and tributes have poured in from the local community.
One message read: "We'll miss your cheery welcome and your lovely smile. Rest in peace dear friend."
A book of condolence has been opened at the town hall and will be available for the community to sign before being handed to Ahmjid's family. A special remembrance service is also being organised.
Chairman of Maybole Community Council David Kiltie said: "Everyone is shocked and stunned by what has happened. The Ismail family is very well known in the town. I have spoken to them and they have been very touched by the response from the community."
