Andrew Thornton of Budgens in Crouch End launched an appeal for bedding, clothes, toys and unused toiletries to help those left homeless by the riots. He has also donated food to the 100 people left homeless who are staying at Tottenham Green Leisure Centre.
Andrew said the community needed to work together and move forward. "Now is the time for the people of East and West Haringey to get together as a community and look for ways in which we can give our young people hope for the future," he said.
Hackney residents have come to the aid of retailer Siva Kandiah, who had more than £10,000-worth of stock stolen by looters. After seeing the damage done to his Clarence Convenience Store, the community set up a donations site, www.helpsiva.com. They have raised more than £16,000.
On the website, Siva thanked everybody. "I believe in this community. I am filled with hope," he said.
