Cardiff-based independent Bhoo Patel is expected to lock horns once more with Tesco this week over a controversial Express development near his store.
Bhoo, who owns the Philog Stores in the Whitchurch area of the city, has been leading the campaign against Tesco's plans to redevelop a former wine shop on Birchgrove Road for several months.
Last month he was successful in forcing Tesco to withdraw its initial planning application following a meeting with Tesco Express managing director Colin Holmes.
Ominously, however, Tesco released a statement saying that it would be submitting a new planning application having taken on board the concerns of the local community.
The new application is expected to be submitted to Cardiff Council this week. Bhoo said that he would study the application carefully and would fight on if needed.
Meanwhile, Tesco has acquired a further site in Cardiff which could be developed as a Tesco Express. The site is a disused bingo hall on City Road and is just a few hundred yards from a Tesco Metro on the same road. Bhoo claimed that independents in Cardiff feared the multiple wanted to open up to 20 Tesco Express stores in the Welsh capital over the next 18 months.
