Retailers have until July 2007 to familiarise themselves with new laws on electrical waste. The EC Directive on Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) aims to cut the amount of electrical equipment going to landfill sites each year.
The directive's proposals include establishing a network of collection facilities to enable consumers to return used items for recycling or reuse. Manufacturers will be responsible for ensuring they plan for products to be recycled rather than dumped.
Energy minister Malcolm Wicks is keen to cut the one million tonnes of electrical waste generated in the UK each year. "Making sure waste is dealt with in an environmentally responsible manner is a priority for us," he said. "This will no doubt help contribute towards creating a better environment for everyone."
