Budgens retailers are anticipating rosy sales ahead of British Tomato Week kicking off on 18 May.

The celebration of British growers, which is set to coincide with warm weather, will see tastings and recipe demonstrations in a number of Budgens stores including Guy Warner’s Moreton-in-Marsh store.

Many others will also stock tomatoes from a range of British suppliers in a bid to encourage customers to buy UK tomatoes.

Now in its 11th year, the event run by the British Tomato Growers Association, offers retailers the perfect opportunity to showcase local produce, Budgens director Mike Baker said.

“This year we’re celebrating heritage tomatoes, a range of tomato varieties grown in times gone by that come in all different shapes, sizes and tastes.

“The advantage we have here at Budgens is that because our retailers are independent, they are able to stock tomatoes from local growers to suit their customers’ tastes. British Tomato Week is a celebration of that,” he said.
