Scottish c-store owners have called for more protection from police and the courts after new crime figures showed physical attacks and threats against staff had risen in the past year.

The latest crime figures from the SGF revealed that the number of physical attacks on staff rose by 15% (775 incidences) in the past year, while threats of violence increased by 29% (123,356 incidences) – often the result of challenges over alcohol sales.

The SGF said this confirmed that the sector was seen as a soft touch and that retailers were increasingly unwilling to prosecute offenders because of the cost.
