The minimum wage for adults over the age of 22 will rise 30p to £5.35 from October 1, 2006. The rate for 18- to 21-year-olds will also increase from £4.25 to £4.45 an hour. Workers aged 16 and 17 will receive a 30p hourly wage increase, rising to £3.30.
The rate for 16- to 17-year-olds was agreed after the government accepted the Low Pay Commission's recommendations in a 2004 report. The 2006 rate is the first rise for 16- to 17-year-olds since an increase to £3 an hour in October 2004.
