The Association of Convenience Stores has produced an online resource to help retailers decide their own policy for the use of plastic bags.
The document, which can be found at www.acs.org.uk in its advice section, suggests getting customer feedback before starting a campaign to reduce bag use, and provides a template for an in-store customer poll. Sources are listed for 'bags for life' and retailers explain how they have reduced bag use.
"One way in which you can reduce the number of carrier bags you give away is to start charging a levy for each bag, with profits being donated to charity or good causes," says the ACS. "This can have a positive effect on trade in your store - studies have shown that when Co-op ran trials for charging a levy and donated the profits to charity, store profits rose."
Posters for the 'Do you really need a bag?' campaign can be downloaded from the website.
