Is it just these 34 stores closing or all the Budgens chain ?
How come they could operate as "Budgens" when they were an independent outfit ?
Certainly they were very expensive compared to others.
My experience of Budgens has been limited to the stores in Moreton-in-Marsh and at the M65 motorway services in Darwen, Lancs.
Both stores were very pricey compared to the retailers we usually use, especially here in Lancashire - ALDI, LIDL, ASDA and the discounters, B&M.
A beer such as Old Speckled Hen would cost £1-99 at Budgens, but £1-25 at B&M or LIDL. Likewise, a large loaf like a Warburtons Seeded Batch would be £1-99 or even £2-10 at Budgens, but £1-25 at ASDA or ICELAND.
The same differential applied to everything else too.
