High-profile independent retailer Raj Aggarwal has left Londis to join Spar.

Raj’s store in Wigston, Leicester, will be converted to Spar in the next few weeks. The retailer is also currently developing a c-store and café in Market Harborough, Leicestershire, which will open next month under the Spar fascia instead of Simply Fresh as previously intended.

Joining Spar will give him new opportunities to acquire additional sites, he told Convenience Store.

Raj said: “I’ve got only positive things to say about Londis, with whom I’ve had a really fruitful retail career for the past 15 years, but it’s time for me to move the business on to the next phase.

“Being with Londis has helped put me on the map as a retailer, and it’s because of them that I am able to call up directors of major companies to get things done.

“The change is no reflection on either Londis or Simply Fresh, which are both great brands, but the opportunity to work with Spar was something that I just couldn’t refuse.”
