Retailers in Devon and Cornwall have the opportunity to learn how to cut shoplifting in their store at a police open day.

The Retail Loss Prevention Day, hosted by Devon and Cornwall Police, takes place on 11 September in Kingsley Village, Faddon and aims to combat shoplifting in stores.

Event organiser Sergeant Emma Fox said: “Nationally we are aware of the increase in shoplifting and this has been seen locally in some areas of Cornwall and we want to provide retailers across Cornwall with information and practical advice which they can use to avoid being targeted.”

According to Office of National Statistics figures, there were over 313,000 incidents of shop theft in England and Wales in the 12 months to September 2013, a 4% increase compared to the previous year.

The event features speakers from retailers Asda and Dunelm Mill as well as crime prevention advice from police officers and crime prevention technology specialists Smartwater.

“We are extremely pleased to have Asda and Dunelm Mill supporting this day,” added Fox. “We hope their experience and knowledge will help provide local businesses with practical information which they can put into place to help prevent retail loss. The event is free to all retailers and we would like to see as many retailers as possible attend.”

Retailers interested in attending can contact Devon and Cornwall Police.
