Budgens has won a top award for its Discover the Taste sirloin steak.

The steak won a Gold Award in EBLEX’s ‘England’s Best Sirloin Steak 2015’ competition. EBLEX is the government agency responsible for driving the profitability and sustainability of British beef and lamb.

The Budgens own-brand Discover the Taste sirloin steak is dry aged for seven days and matured for a further 14 days “to develop a fantastic texture and flavour”. The 210g pack sells in Budgens stores for £7.00.

Richard Perugi, trading manager at Budgens said: “We’ve worked hard to ensure we provide the very best quality British meats to our customers at the right prices and it’s great for our products to be recognised by the industry.

“We are really delighted to win a gold medal for steak from our Discover the Taste range.”

As a gold award winner, Budgens will now go on to compete against other finalists for the overall prize of “England’s best sirloin steak” which will be announced in April.

Meanwhile, Budgens opened its second new concept store in Byfleet, Surrey last week.

The store, which has been trading in Byfleet since 2011, was officially re-opened after an extensive refit on Thursday 22 January.

Mike Baker, Budgens director said: “It’s great to see the new concept being adapted to a smaller format store. The changes in Broadstone have been really well-received with sales revenue up 25% and I’m confident we’ll get a similar reaction here.”

The store plan is focused on the brand’s key shopper missions - a strong lunch offering, top-up shop and meal for tonight, and will serve as a good example of how the concept can be rolled-out at a lower cost.

Dan Rapson, store manager at Budgens Byfleet said, “I’m delighted with our new store. We’ve increased the fresh food selection, have a really nice bakery and lots of fantastic new local suppliers.”
