Amazon claims to have launched the “world’s most advanced shopping technology” in its inaugural Amazon Go convenience store, which has opened in Seattle, US.

The 1,800sq ft store has been designed without checkouts to enable shoppers to take the products they want and leave without queuing, using the Amazon Go app.

Amazon’s Just Walk Out technology, similar to that used in self-driving cars, automatically detects when products are taken from or returned to the shelves and keeps track of them in a virtual cart.

Shoppers require an Amazon account, a supported smartphone, and the free Amazon Go app. Following a shop, consumers’ Amazon accounts will be charged and they will be sent a receipt.

The store includes food to go options for breakfast, lunch and dinner made in-store each day, grocery essentials, local products and Amazon Meal Kits.

Amazon Go is currently open to Amazon employees and will open to the public in early 2017.
